Disappearing Hourglass 2 Tutorial

Don’t you just love complicated looking quilt blocks but in reality it was a simple technique that was used? I love quilts that look complicated but are not. To me, quilts are like puzzle pieces and I like to take a pattern apart and make it even easier for me to make them.
I follow Jenny Doan of Missouri Star Quilts Co on her YouTube channel and came across the Disappearing Hourglass 2 video. I’m a visual learner but I do like written instructions also. So, I took the time to write the instructions to the Disappearing Hourglass 2. Thanks Jenny for a wonderful video to follow along for those of us that are visual learners too.

Disappearing Hourglass 2 Tutorial
- Take 2 − 10 inch squares and sew all around using a scant 1/4” seam allowance
- Cut diagonally in both directions (corner to corner)
- Press & iron open to the dark side (makes it easier to nest the seams)
- Hourglass – 2 darks pointing in & 2 lights pointing in **Be careful, its easy to sew them into a pinwheel block.
- How to figure what measurement to cut from center seam on all four sides: My block measures 12 3/4” so take that measurement and divide it by 3; makes it 4 1/4” then divide that by 2 and you get 2 1/8”. So you cut using the 2 1/8” measurement from the center seam on all four sides.
- Separate your blocks a bit.
- Turn corner blocks – where small blocks are at the top
- Turn middle block one time or a quarter turn

I’ve added the pictures below so that if you would like to print off the tutorial you can. Sorry for the shadows on the photos, I was doing this late at night.
Isn’t that when we do are best work? 😉
