Quilting: How To Set Your Seams In 3 Simple Steps
What does it mean “to set your seams” or “setting my seams” in quilting? I’m pretty sure you have come across this in either your instructions or when watching quilting videos. I used to NOT think this as an important step, but now I do!
How To Set Your Seams
- Place sewn pieces on your ironing board.
- Place hot iron on your piece.
- DO NOT move the iron back and forth (we are NOT ironing here), let the weight of the iron and the heat do the job. This step sets the seam.
This is just another step to improving accuracy and embed the thread into the fibers of your fabric. It will help with puckers too.
I did not use to do this step at all, it all depended on my mood at the time. I used to use the finger press method instead of setting my seams. But now I do it ALL THE TIME!! Its a huge help getting all your pieces to line up and work together.
Your quilting top just seems to lay flat when you do this. When sewing rows together I alternate my seams so that I can butt them up together! That seems to be another post for a later time…butting up your seams! Don’t you think?
Try it out for yourself!!!
Press the seam for one unit and don’t do it for the other unit. Do you see a difference?
Do you or do you not set your seams?
