Fabric Box Tutorial – Made in 30 minutes
I’m in a Facebook quilting group and the Seaside Stitches Fabric Box Tutorial was posted over and over again. I let weeks go by before I had to do some for myself. I did not add buttons or tack the inside flaps down. I don’t use pins.
The inside flaps got tacked down when I did the top stitching around the box’s edge. These fabric boxes are easy and quick to do, around 30 minutes. The first one will take a bit longer to do until you get the hang of it. Enjoy! 🙂
Try out different size squares or rectangles and let me know what sizes you started out with by leaving me a comment.
My box came out at 4″ x 4″ x 3″ high.

Fabric Box Tutorial
What you will need:
- 2 – 10” square Fabric of Your Choice
- 1 – 10” square batting of your choice (I used Warm & Natural)
- Marking Tool – fabric pen or chalk pencil
- Walking Foot
- Ruler
- Scissors to cut thread
- Sewing Machine
Level: Easy
Project Time: 30 minutes
Directions:
- Pick out your 2 fabric pieces and 1 batting. Cut them down to 10” or you can do 11” and after sewing all three layers together you can cut them down.
- Put fabric pieces right sides together and place them on top of batting square.
- Stitch around perimeter using a 1/4” seam allowance (I know where that is on my walking foot); leaving a 4” opening on one side.
- Trim the corners and turn it inside out and press down with your hands.
- I marked an “X” on my fabric top with a disappearing fabric pen.
- Starting at end with the opening, top stitch close to the edge around the square. The opening will be closed as you go.
- Quilt as desired or like me I just kept going, pivoting on the marked “X” that I had made.
- Fold the square in half, with the fabric you want on the inside of the box being on the outside.
- Mark your 2” lines and draw a diagonal. I used my chalk pencil so that you can see better. Do this for the other end.
- Stitch on the diagonal line you had drawn.
- Open up and fold it in the other direction, and once again marking your diagonal lines and stitching the 2 remaining corners.
- Turn box inside out.
- Fold points over and top stitch around the top of the box.
- You are done!!! Enjoy!!
